How to Stay Healthy During the Calgary Stampede

For many people in Calgary, Stampede is the best 10 days of the year.

It's a time for rodeos, concerts, midway food, pancake breakfasts, family gatherings, and catching up with friends. But for many of my clients, it's also the time they worry about losing all the progress they've worked so hard to achieve.

After 22 years as a personal trainer in Calgary, I've learned something important:

You don't have to choose between enjoying Stampede and staying healthy.

Too many people believe that one week of indulgence means they might as well "start over on Monday." That mindset is what causes people to lose momentum—not the mini donuts or the occasional burger.

The goal isn't perfection.

The goal is balance.

Here are my top tips for enjoying everything the Calgary Stampede has to offer while staying on track with your health and fitness goals.

1. Don't Stop Working Out

One of the biggest mistakes I see every July is people deciding to "take a break" from the gym.

Ten days quickly turns into three weeks.

You don't need to train for two hours every day.

Even a 30-45 minute workout can:

  • Burn calories
  • Keep your metabolism elevated
  • Maintain your strength
  • Reduce stress
  • Help offset some of the extra food and drinks

The hardest workout is often just showing up.

2. Start Your Day with Protein

If you're heading to the grounds or a Stampede breakfast, don't leave the house hungry.

A protein-rich breakfast helps:

  • Control hunger
  • Reduce cravings
  • Keep blood sugar more stable
  • Prevent overeating later in the day

Great options include:

  • Eggs
  • Greek yogurt
  • Cottage cheese
  • Protein oatmeal
  • A protein smoothie

Arriving hungry is one of the fastest ways to overeat.

3. Walk as Much as You Can

Here's the good news...

Most people underestimate how much walking they do during Stampede.

Between parking, exploring the grounds, watching events, and visiting vendors, it's easy to rack up 10,000 to 20,000 steps in a day.

Use that to your advantage.

Park farther away.
Walk between events.
Take the stairs whenever possible.

Movement matters.

4. Choose Your Treats Wisely

Let's be honest...

Nobody goes to Stampede to eat grilled chicken and broccoli.

And that's okay.

Instead of trying everything, pick one or two foods you've been looking forward to.

Maybe it's:

  • Mini donuts
  • BBQ brisket
  • A famous burger
  • Fresh lemonade
  • Ice cream

Enjoy it without guilt.

The problem isn't one treat.

The problem is having ten.

5. Stay Hydrated

July heat, sunshine, walking, and alcohol can quickly lead to dehydration.

Many people mistake dehydration for hunger.

Carry a water bottle whenever possible and aim to drink water throughout the day.

A simple habit I recommend is alternating every alcoholic drink with a bottle or glass of water.

Your body—and tomorrow morning—will thank you.

6. Be Smart with Alcohol

Stampede and social gatherings often mean more drinks than usual.

Alcohol can:

  • Increase appetite
  • Lower inhibitions around food choices
  • Slow recovery
  • Disrupt sleep
  • Affect workout performance

You don't have to avoid it completely.

Simply:

  • Set a limit beforehand
  • Drink water between beverages
  • Eat before drinking
  • Skip sugary mixed drinks when possible

Moderation always wins.

7. Don't Let One Meal Become One Bad Week

This is where most people lose progress.

They enjoy one indulgent meal and think:

"I've already blown my diet."

So they continue eating poorly for the next several days.

One meal won't ruin your progress.

One week of giving up might.

Enjoy your food, then return to your normal routine at the next meal.

8. Prioritize Sleep

Late nights are part of the Stampede experience.

But poor sleep affects:

  • Hunger hormones
  • Recovery
  • Energy
  • Motivation
  • Food cravings

You don't have to get eight perfect hours every night.

Just don't let lack of sleep become your new routine.

9. Keep Your Long-Term Goals in Mind

Remember why you started.

Whether your goal is:

  • Losing weight
  • Building muscle
  • Improving your health
  • Increasing your confidence

Stampede is only ten days.

Your health is for life.

Successful people know how to enjoy special occasions without abandoning their long-term goals.

10. Remember That Fitness Is About Balance

One of the biggest lessons I've learned after 22 years of coaching clients in Calgary is this:

The healthiest people aren't the ones who never enjoy themselves.

They're the ones who know how to enjoy life without letting one celebration turn into a setback.

Fitness should enhance your life—not control it.

Go to the concerts.
Enjoy the rodeo.
Eat the mini donuts.
Spend time with family and friends.

Then wake up the next day, drink some water, get your workout in, eat a healthy breakfast, and keep moving forward.

That's what long-term success looks like.

Final Thoughts

The Calgary Stampede is one of the greatest traditions in our city, and you should enjoy it.

After 22 years of helping Calgarians achieve their fitness goals, I've seen firsthand that sustainable success doesn't come from avoiding life's celebrations—it comes from learning how to balance them.

Train consistently.
Eat well most of the time.
Stay active.
Hydrate.
Prioritize protein.
And don't let one fun weekend—or even ten fun days—erase months of hard work.

If you're looking for expert coaching, accountability, and a fitness plan that fits your real life, 12 Fitness is here to help.
